Art Department

The art department is one of the most important departments of a film crew, spanning multiple disciplines and employing workers with a variety of artistic skill sets. The art department is the team responsible for creating the overall look of a television show or feature film, as determined by the director. Together, they design, build, and decorate the sets on which the actors shoot, being mindful of every little detail that can support the director’s vision, working closely with the director of photography, camera crew, lighting crew, locations crew, visual effects crew, makeup department, costume department and special effects department, to help make the sets shine.

  • Set Assistant / On-Set Dresser place furniture, hang pictures, and put out decorative items. They are also responsible for some light construction and assembly of small items. They also move items as necessary to make room for the filming equipment. During the shoot, an on-set dresser ensures that the props and furnishing are in the proper location for the script and to maintain continuity, as scenes are often shot out of order.

  • Props Assistant under the direction of the prop master, is in charge of all props used throughout the production. Some productions may designate an outside props person to purchase props, and an inside props person to oversee their placement, use, and maintenance on set.

  • Prop Makers work in the properties departments of feature films, making any props that are not being bought in, or hired.

  • Product Specialist for beauty shots, packshots and table tops, in the fields of liquids, food, beer and products. 

  • Special Construction Soft props and replica builds are a major part of the special effects industry.
